Qatar has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and among Arab countries. It is also at the seventh rank globally in terms of low prevalence of crime, according to the global database of Crime Index for Countries 2016, issued by Numbeo.
According to the latest index, South Korea is at the first place followed by Singapore, Georgia, Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong. The database shows Qatar marking 20.41 points in the crime index while South Korea getting 14.99 points.
The database has used the scale 0 to 100 and considered crime levels lower than 20 points as very low, and between 20 and 40 as low. Countries with very high rates of crimes are marked more than 80 points.
The Numbeo surveys several aspects of crime and safety in countries and cities, which include seriousness of the crimes, change of crime rates in the past three years, walking during daytime and night, robbery level, stealing of cars, physical attacks by strangers, insult on the streets, and attacks because of skin colour, ethnic origin and religion.
Qatar has been maintaining top rank in the MENA region in Global Peace Index published by Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) since 2009. The IEP, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, uses several indicators related to peace and safety including political stability, level of crimes in the community, internal conflicts, and relations with neighbouring countries.
