Lionel Messi’s first Instagram post after Argentina’s victory over France on Sunday became the most-liked post by an athlete in Instagram history. As of Tuesday evening, the post, which includes ten photos of Messi, the first of which shows him wearing the “Bisht” cloak presented to him by the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and celebrating with his teammates and the World Cup trophy, had more than 65.2 million likes and 1.7 million comments.

‘CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!’ On the post, Messi penned a message in Spanish. “So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it...... Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians... We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’re seeing each other very soon.”

Messi was a part of the previous record for the most likes on an athlete’s Instagram post. The previous record-holder for the most-liked post by an athlete on Instagram was a picture of him and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess as part of a Louis Vuitton ad prior to the World Cup. However, the post on Ronaldo’s account received 42 million more likes than the post on Messi’s account (32 million).

Ronaldo has the most followers on the app, with 519 million as of Tuesday.

Messi passed the 404 million follower mark on Instagram on Tuesday, putting him in second place.

Earlier on Tuesday, Messi posted three photos on Instagram, saying “Good morning,” showing him sleeping and awake with the trophy,

as well as sipping mate next to it, and the post received 39.4 million likes in eight hours.
