Lionel Messi’s first Instagram post after Argentina’s victory over France on Sunday became the most-liked post by an athlete in Instagram history. As of Tuesday evening, the post, which includes ten photos of Messi, the first of which shows him wearing the “Bisht” cloak presented to him by the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and celebrating with his teammates and the World Cup trophy, had more than 65.2 million likes and 1.7 million comments.

The previous record-holder for the most-liked post by an athlete on Instagram was a picture of him and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess as part of a Louis Vuitton ad prior to the World Cup. However, the post on Ronaldo’s account received 42 million more likes than the post on Messi’s account (32 million).
Ronaldo has the most followers on the app, with 519 million as of Tuesday.
Messi passed the 404 million follower mark on Instagram on Tuesday, putting him in second place.
Earlier on Tuesday, Messi posted three photos on Instagram, saying “Good morning,” showing him sleeping and awake with the trophy,
as well as sipping mate next to it, and the post received 39.4 million likes in eight hours.
