The participation of the Qatari composer Dana Al Fardan in the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament received wide commendations and standing ovation from masses, because of her powerful voice, distinct performance and success in combining the Arabic music with the western one.Her performance raised the interest of the media when she showed up dressed in the Qatari garment among a substantial number of international and Arab artists, which was a message to introduce the world to the Qatari and gulf cultures and customs, and ensure that the gulf and Arabic human can access universalism while simultaneously maintain his or her customs, traditions and legacies.
In her statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dana Al Fardan stated that her singing both in the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament underscores the trust of the State of Qatar in the abilities and talents of the Qatari young people, and the desire to be in the front. This is remarkable, and is evidenced by what she saw, along with the trust that was put entrusted in herto participate in the global event. She added that this essentially places major responsibility on their shoulders to best represent the State of Qatar through the right way in commensurate with the customs and traditions of the Qatari community, she said.
Al Fardan hoped that she should have perfectly represented her country in this global event, indicating that she was chosen by director Ahmed Al Baker, which underscores that there is a bit of desire for the concerned entities in the state to offer opportunities for the young Qatari talents, and she is proud of that, adding that such participation is a unique experience for her, specially that it was a major sporting event to be held in Qatar for the first time in an Arab country and Middle East region which left indelible memories that would remain for ever. Al Fardan pointed out that it was the first time she showed up on the stage, because the event deserved that, specially that it was held in Qatar and all world eyes were being turned to Qatar.
Composer Dana Al Fardan pointed out that the songs she performed both in the opening and closing ceremonies were basically meant to convey the Qatari culture, identity and customs, along with the Qatari fine art to the entire world, and underscore that Qatar is definitely abound with artistes whose performances are not much less than the current international artistes, and to simultaneously confirm that Qatar is a generous and hospitable and welcomes all, which are things derived from the Arab and Islamic traditions, she said, adding that her participation in the song of “Umm Al Hanaya” during the opening ceremony portrays that the old Qatari woman welcomes and cares for everyone which confirms this message, and the keenness to show up with the Qatari traditional fashion underscores the pride in the Qatari identity and traditions, she said.
She pointed out that standing on the tournament stage during the final game in the middle of the large crowd of spectators nearby international artists had bolstered confidence in herself, adding that the relation that linked her with the group of female artists in the ceremony had contributed to creating distinct atmospheres and good reaction among them on the stage and played a role in this success.
With regard to her ability in combining the ornamental music and song with the western ones, she said that she always prefers this combination, and she had performed them perfectly since the early stage when she started to sing, as she can combine between the Arabic, Korean and Indian songs together, along with her ability to train the band of Ajyal Tunes as part of Ajyal Film Festival 2022 since 2019, pointing out that all reactions she had received were entirely positive and gave her an impetus, whether in terms of her participation in the opening or closing ceremonies, or even in the events accompanying the tournament, adding that she received commendation messages from professional female artists at the gulf and Arab region’s levels, in addition to the positive reactions from the masses.
Commenting on whether the world cup tournament represents an opportunity to open the door in front of the Qatari song to take its way towards universalism, Dana Al Fardan pointed out that after the Qatari voice had participated in this global festival, it would be possible for the Qatari song to potentially vibrate in other global festivals, anticipating that the future will witness further successful Qatari voices and talents, revealing that there is currently a film she embarks on completing its writing. It is a gulf horror movie whose idea was derived from an old book for one of the Kuwaiti writers.
