THE Agricultural Affairs Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment improved marketing of Qatari farm products through an array of activities in 2016, says a report.
The department organised the first local ripe dates festival in Souq Waqif in which 21 Qatari farms participated and 61 tonnes of ripe Qatari dates were sold.
Besides, a larger number of Qatari farms were allowed to participate in Qatari agricultural yards including Al Mazroua, Al Khor and Al Dakhira as well as Al Wakra yards to showcase and sell their products.
The yards worked for seven months this season with participation of 78 Qatari farms and registered sale of 4,785 tonnes of fresh Qatari vegetables.
Meanwhile, work is in progress on two new yards, which will open in the next season. Moreover, a programme in cooperation with the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC)was launched to promote locally grown vegetables by exhibiting them at hypermarkets.
Furthermore, to spread the use of modern water-saving technology in Qatari farms, the department has completed preparation for installation of 73 green houses in Qatari farms.
The department also worked on expanding farm activities and upgrading their levels. Fifty Qatari farms have been selected for honey production whereas 500 beehives would be distributed as a grant to these farms which have received training on beekeeping.
