The Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing, held a ceremony on Saturday to hand over the apartments of the second phase of HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani residential city in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip.
The ceremony was attended by HE Ambassador Mohammed al Emadi, chairman of the Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, former Palestinian Prime Minister Dr Ismail Haniyeh, Palestinian Minister of Public Works and Housing Dr Mufid al Hasayneh, Deputy Chairman of the Qatari Committee Khaled al Hardan and a number of Palestinian ministers.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Emadi hailed the efforts of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and the Father Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani in support of the Gaza Strip and the implementation of dozens of vital service and housing projects including HH Sheikh Hamad City.
The second phase of the HH Hamad City includes 1,264 residential units. As many as 1,060 housing units were delivered during the first phase. The total cost of the two phases is approximately $120 million.
Earlier, Ambassador Emadi attended the foundation-laying ceremony for Hamad Bin Jassim Day-care Centre in Gaza.
Qatar has been focusing on finding a solution for the electricity crisis in the Gaza Strip and considering the establishment of a hospital in Rafah, he said.
"We are studying a project for connecting the power line 161 to the Gaza Strip and modernising the current electricity distribution network and transformers," said Emadi. A Study is under way to establish a fully-equipped hospital for cancer patients in the strip, he added.
Ambassador Emadi arrived in Gaza on Wednesday accompanied by a high-level delegation of Qatar Fund for Development, headed by its chairman Khalifa bin Jassim al Kuwari. A medical team is also part of the delegation.
