Athens:Greece wants to extend an already existing fence along its border with Turkey by 35 kilometres, Greek Minister for Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos told the news channel Skai on Sunday.

He put the cost of this at around $107 million with the money coming from the Greek budget. The EU has not yet approved Athens’ funding request for the construction of the additional fence.

It should be ready in about 10 months, Theodorikakos added. In recent years, Athens has built a 37.5-kilometre-long, about 5-metre-high steel fence along shallow parts of the border river, known as the Evros in Greek and Meriç in Turkish. This is to prevent migrants from crossing from Turkey into Greece and thus into the EU. (dpa)
