The State of Qatar has been elected to chair the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property at the Arab League, for a period of two years. This came during the 10th meeting of the Committee, which was held at the headquarters of the League of Arab States’ General Secretariat in Cairo, on February 15-16.

The Technical Committee for Intellectual Property is tasked with setting rules for cooperation between Arab countries in the field of intellectual property rights protection. The Committee’s central role is the enhancement of Arab awareness regarding intellectual property issues and while encouraging innovation.

The Committee members unanimously elected Amna Jaber Al-Kuwari, Director of the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as Chair of the Technical Committee for a period of two years.

The election of the State of Qatar to chair the Technical Committee reflects the tremendous interest that the State attaches to intellectual property issues. The Committee members have entrusted the State of Qatar with this position in recognition of the progress it has made in this strategic field.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the recommendations of its 9th meeting in February, as well as the implementation of the recommendations of the sub-committees on industrial property and copyright and related rights.

The Committee also agreed on establishing a regional network of technology and innovation support centres, all while discussing mechanisms to implement statistics and specific indicators of the reality of industrial property in Arab countries.
