Filipino cyclists received top awards in this year’s Dukhan Climbs Road Race, a road racing competition organised by the Qatar Cycling Federation (QCF). One of them, a Filipina OFW in Qatar, emerged as champion in the women’s category.
Marynel Bernardino bested all other female participants from different expat communities as she won the first place in the said competition. She is also the top placer in the Lusail Individual Time Trial 2022 where she received the Roadbike Women Senior and the Fastest Woman in Roadbike awards.
Bernardino shared the road with Loy Rosario who ranked 3rd in Men C category in the Dukhan race. Both of them joined the Race 3 with 2 Laps and 52 km challenge. Meanwhile, Clayton Mallari took the 2nd place in Men D category at the same challenge.
The three podium winners are all members of Bike to Work Qatar team. They all received medals and gift packs. Many Filipinos participated in the contest and most of them scored high in the official results.
The competition took place in the hilly, multi-altitude road racing terrain in the western side of Qatar with a KOM-style hilltop finish. Veteran and seasoned riders enjoyed the race because of the change of scenery and challenges.
After the action-packed Dukhan’s hill climbs, QCF is heading back to a flat terrain racing in Al Ghuwayriyah.
A popular venue for a road cycling race, this village offers another view of Qatar. Despite the almost flat feature, the 18km triangular loop
will be extremely challenging for the riders. More Filipino cycling enthusiasts are
expected to join in the upcoming race.
