QATAR GENERAL Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) announced the completion of the second phase of the Tarsheed 22 (T22) project at a ceremony at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) in Doha on Monday.
Designed to educate Qatari school students about energy conservation through a love of football, the programme has achieved annual carbon emission reductions surpassing 688 tons and brought Qatar one step closer to achieving a carbon neutral World Cup.
Minister of Energy & Industry HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Fawzia al Khater, Kahramaa President Eng Essa bin Hilal al Kuwari, Secretary-General of the SC Hassan al Thawadi and other dignitaries joined students and school representatives to celebrate the occasion.
T22 supports 22 primary schools annually in communities experiencing 2022 FIFA World Cup stadium construction. The programme targets students, their parents and families, and school employees through sports activities, sustainability and energy conservation training, and energy monitoring in participating schools. With the support of the Supreme Education Council, Tarsheed and the SC will expand the project to include all Qatari primary, intermediate and secondary schools by 2022.
"Tarsheed 22 aims to builda society conscious of the importance of preserving the country's wealth. T22 taps into the excitement surrounding the 2022 FIFA World Cup and uses football to promote the message in a fun and engaging way. The SC shares our commitment to sustainable development, making it a perfect partner for this project," said Eng Essa bin Hilal al Kuwari.
Hassan al Thawadi said:"Based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, the SC places environmental sustainability as one of its core values. We work with our partners to deliver a sustainable 2022 FIFA World Cup and drive positive change towards a sustainable economy to ensure Qatar's development."
The second phase of T22 was launched at the start of the 2016/2017 school year, and thanks to energy-saving technologies and like energy-efficient light bulbs, dimmer switches and aerated faucets, the 22 target schools reduced their annual consumption of electricity by 1,100 million units and water by 4,350 cubic metre, saving QR400,000 annually. The project decreased carbon emissions by nearly 700 tons per year.
As part of the campaign, energy efficient schools, best teachers, individuals and students were honoured at the ceremony.
