THE Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has launched its latest documentary book titled 'Qatar Traditional Ships', compiled by its researchers at the Studies and Research Committee.
The launch took place during a press conference held in the presence of Director of the Research Department, Dr Nadia al Madahka.
Speaking on behalf of the General Manager of Cultural Village Foundation Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti, Dr Madahka said:"The book, a documentation in words, images and paintings, captures all recorded literature related to old Arabian ships, its tradition, manufacture, design, types, names, famous owners and captains, literature, poetry and paintings which tackled the issue and themes of dhows, one of world's most graceful sailing crafts."
Dr Madahka further said:"This book, through information and photographs, depict the unique relationship between Qataris and sailing ships, a major tool used for fishing as well as for coastal trade.
"We are pleased to stress that the publication of this important new documentary book is in line with our mission to revive Qatar's marine heritage, boost national identity in our community and document the relationship between our new generations, their past, traditions and history. The old Arab wooden dhows are considered one of the most glorious features of Qatari and Arabian Gulf heritage over centuries, particularly, in the pre-oil discovery era, when these dhows were used for fishing, pearl-diving, transportation, trade and other commercial activities."
