The recent editions of Qatar International Food Festival have become increasingly popular, drawing foodies from all over looking to sample the latest and greatest culinary creations. But what goes into creating this event, and what makes it successful?

Qatar Tribune spoke with Maha Al Mazrouqi, a representative of Qatar Tourism and a spokesperson for the QIFF, on the experiences and perspectives on the thriving event. From the festival’s origins to the organising, the conversation sheds light on the many factors that make a food festival successful. Excerpts:

What is the history of the QIFF? How did it start? And how has it been going so far?

The annual QIFF, organised by Qatar Tourism, celebrates the world’s diverse culinary traditions. The festival was launched in 2010 at the Museum of Islamic Art Park and was met with great enthusiasm from visitors who enjoyed the variety of food stalls and cooking demonstrations. Qatar Tourism noted the positive feedback and expanded the festival in subsequent years.

As the festival evolved, it became popular, attracting more visitors and international chefs. Today, the QIFF is a platform for promoting local and international chefs and restaurants, encouraging cultural exchange, and highlighting Qatar’s dynamic food scene.

In 2020, the QIFF marked its 10th anniversary with a special edition that brought together over 150 food stalls and chefs from all over the world.

The festival has become a significant event celebrating the best of gastronomy and hospitality, a must-attend festival for food enthusiasts. It is an excellent opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in Qatar’s vibrant food cultures, sights, sounds, and flavours while enjoying a fun-filled day with family and friends.

What can visitors expect this year in terms of performers, activities, and attractions?

The QIFF offers visitors an array of world-class cuisine from over 80 vendors. In 2023, the festival is joining the celebration of the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture by dedicating a specific area that showcases the flavours of Indonesian cuisine.

Visitors will also witness globally renowned master chefs in action, performing interactive cooking shows on the festival’s central stage every day. In addition to this, aspiring chefs can participate in ticketed food masterclasses, providing them with an excellent opportunity to learn new skills from industry professionals. Whether you’re a food enthusiast or a professional chef, the festival offers a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the art of cooking and brings people together through their love of food.

How does this edition differ from previous ones or other similar events?

Running until March 21, 2023, this edition is taking place for the first time at Al Sa’ad Plaza in Lusail, an iconic new destination in Qatar. In addition to the range of cuisines, visitors can enjoy unique dining concepts, such as the renowned Le Petit Chef and daily cooking theatre with award-winning chefs.

Furthermore, the QIFF 2023 introduces a dedicated area for vegan and healthy foods, catering to a demand for healthier food options. The addition of this area will showcase innovative and delicious plant-based and health food options that cater to different dietary needs and preferences.

The QIFF is a must-attend event for food lovers, offering visitors an immersive and unforgettable gastronomic experience that celebrates local and international cuisines. What do you think sets this festival apart from other events in the area, and why should people attend?

How does the festival benefit the local businesses and community economically and culturally?

Over the past decade, the QIFF has played a role in Qatar’s thriving dining scene by contributing to the growth of the hospitality industry. By attracting international chefs and creating a platform to support local businesses, the QIFF has boosted the local economy and tourism industry. The festival also allows new and upcoming chefs and food entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and gain exposure to potential customers and investors.

In addition to its economic impact, the QIFF has significant cultural significance.
