Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani on Sunday paid an inspection visit to Hamad Port. The visit aimed at reviewing developments in the workflow at the port and to follow up on the role played by the Department of Radiation Protection and the Department of Chemicals and Hazardous Waste in controlling customs shipments coming into the country.
During the visit, the minister listened to a presentation by the staff of the two departments, which included a detailed explanation of the steps they take in monitoring and analysing materials to ensure the implementation of protection against radiation and chemicals with the highest efficiency and professionalism.
The presentation included introducing the role of the radiation gates system in detecting hazardous materials during their transit to ensure that shipments containing hazardous materials are transferred to laboratories to identify their components and dangerousness, in a manner that achieves the highest standards of radiation safety and security for Qatar.
The visit also included a field tour of the port’s laboratories to see their readiness and the capabilities available in them, including modern equipment and advanced technological techniques, which in turn help achieve the ministry’s vision of ensuring the security of all materials entering the country.
The visit concluded with a field tour of the customs inspection platforms, where the minister witnessed the procedures and steps taken by the ministry in releasing customs shipments, after examining them and ensuring their safety and that they are free of any hazardous materials that can harm the public health of the residents of Qatar.
In the aspect of qualifying and training the cadres working in the port, a number of officials in the ministry provided a detailed explanation of the courses and training workshops that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is conducting in qualifying its cadres of employees to carry out the tasks assigned to them to the fullest, as well as the optimal use of all modern devices that they work on and learn about to implement the relevant legislation and decisions.
At the end of the visit, the minister praised the measures and efforts made by the employees of the two departments in applying the law and decisions related to preserving the radioactive safety of Qatar, and preventing dangerous chemicals from coming into the country.
He urged the employees to work with complete vigilance and pay attention to achieving the highest standards of security and safety in dealing with hazardous materials in order to preserve their health and the health of the public.
