The fish market at the Corniche, which is now the only market of its kind in Doha after the relocation of the central fish market to Umm Salal Ali, is expected to draw more customers in the coming days.
The shifting of the central market about 30 kms away from Doha to Umm Salal Ali could act as a deterrent for many to travel far from Doha for their daily fish requirements.
The move seems to be a boon for vendors at the Corniche, which is expected to see people flocking to it, leading to a boom in their business.
Rehman Bava, a fish vendor at the Corniche market, said,"The volume of sales has gone up by 20 to 30 percent after the fish market at the Central Market closed down. We are expecting more customers in the coming days."
Echoing Bava, another vendor said,"Obviously, individuals will not travel such a long distance from Doha to Umm Salal for their requirement. We expect more than 100 per cent growth in sales on the weekend."
The Corniche market, which underwent a makeover, is attracting a large number of visitors these days, thanks to the availability of fresh fish.
The wooden-panel paved harbour, fibre fishing boats floating on water and huge vessels anchored at nearby Doha Port offer visitors a visual treat.
A customer said,"Even though the Corniche fish market doesn't have facility for cleaning fish, the yield directly from the sea is a major attraction. Currently, we have no option for fish other than the Corniche harbour market in Doha."
Some customers also pointed out that the shortage of parking slots and lack of washrooms will be a concern when the market gets crowded.
The market has a total of 29 stalls.
The fish market is open from 7 am to 1 pm and from 7 pm until midnight.
