Manchester City aim to give star striker Erling Haaland a new long-term contract after a release clause in his current deal was scrapped, according to portal The Athletic on Wednesday.
Haaland arrived last summer from Borussia Dortmund and is an instant hit at the Premier League champions, scoring 47 goals in 40 games in all competititons as City chase a title treble.
The Athletic said that Haaland’s contract until 2027 included a £150 million ($186 million) release clause for 2024. But that was linked to the future of manager Pep Guardiola who has since renews his deal until 2025.
As a result, the clause was removed but according to the report it is not clear whether Haaland’s contract includes other release clauses.
The Athletic said that City want to give him a new contract to tie him to the club long-term, and that they believe he is ready for talks and at least for the time being not planning a move to his dream club Real Madrid.
