The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), represented by the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), launched its new initiative to reduce water and electricity consumption by 5% in the residential sector.
The initiative contributes to Qatar National Vision 2030 by raising awareness, endorsing rationalization techniques and promoting responsible consumer behavior with detailed follow-up techniques being implemented to provide customers with support and guarantee long-term results.
During a press conference, held remotely, Public Relations and Communication Manager at Kahramaa Mohamed Ali Saleh Al Mohannadi affirmed the Corporation's keenness to launch all initiatives in order to raise the efficiency and improve operational processes to ensure the provision of the best services to all customers and contribute to the preservation of natural resources of the State of Qatar, and to exploit it without attrition, stressing the importance of the new initiative aimed at energy sustainability in accordance with Vision 2030 and the National Strategy 2018-2022.
He said the initiative will enhance the culture of rationalization of consumption, which the national program seeks to consecrate socially over time, so that it becomes an integral part of our lives and a daily indispensable way for us, leading to the building of a balanced consumption pattern, through which everyone bears full responsibility. He added the initiative will have an important role in raising awareness of methods of rationalizing consumption, as well as how to contribute to preserving the local environment and sustaining its natural balance for current and future generations, in order to achieve the comprehensive development that Qatar seeks to achieve.
For his part, Tarsheed president engineer Abdulaziz Al Hammadi indicated that the initiative is closely related to the sustainability goals of the State of Qatar and the 17th global strategic goals in accordance with the Paris Agreement signed by the State of Qatar to reduce its carbon footprint and combat climate change.
He added that it is important to implement all available solutions of various kinds to preserve natural resources of water and electricity, and this is of course what the national program "Tarsheed" has adopted since its inception until now, pointing out in the same context that the new initiative will constitute a milestone in terms of results in the residential sector, if it succeeds in reaching the desired reduction, estimated at 5% for both electricity and water consumption, calling on all segments of society to cooperate in order to translate the desired goals on the ground.
The initiative seeks to achieve 3 goals: environmental sustainability by reducing harmful emissions, preserving natural resources, and finally developing society by introducing energy efficiency as a community lifestyle.
The initiative will be implemented in 2021 and 2022 in four basic phases. The first phase which involves introducing the initiative, its goals, expected results, and filling out the residential consumption questionnaire from April 11, to May 20, 2021.
The second phase is to analyze the results of the questionnaires and launch an interactive platform on the Tarsheed page on the Kahramaa website to follow up on the participants on how to reduce 5% of the electricity and water consumption in every home.
During the third phase, from August 1, 2021 to January 31, 2022, an interactive platform through an electronic application will be launched.
This will provide a plan designed for each subscriber to achieve the efficiency of electricity and water use specifically in each house and according to the number of electrical appliances and the quality of water tools.
The fourth phase will be run from February 1, 2022 to March 1, 2022 while evaluating the previous phases. Results of the initiative will be announced during this phase.
"We expect that this initiative will achieve effective results in the case of saving electricity by 5%, which is estimated at about 600 gigawatts per hour. In the case of saving 5% of water it's about 11mn cu m. This will help the country achieve savings estimated at about QR 212 mn," Engineer Mohamed Al Sharshani, head of the technical section at Tarsheed.
Kahramaa has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Japanese Company 'Marubeni' to evolve an energy efficiency platform to strengthen the efforts of Tarsheed Programme.
