There has been a major shift in consumer attitudes, shown in the shifting behaviours towards single use plastic and one’s carbon footprint. The pandemic has accelerated this trend and has shown that consumers will continue to base their decisions on which brands and businesses to buy from based on their ethical and sustainable credentials. In response to this, and as part of its mission to be a sustainable, responsible, self-sufficient business, Carrefour launched its first Qatari Festival in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture, and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce in 2020. The initiative was born with the intention of supporting local farmers by featuring their produce across a select number of Carrefour stores. The festival went on to highlight and feature produce from prominent local farms, namely Safwa, Khodra, Mazzrati, QT farm, Nabati, QADCO, and Agrico,.Laurent Hausknecht, Country Manager of Carrefour Qatar commented on Carrefour’s ongoing commitment to creating value for its industry and economy by supporting local farming and the supply chain: “Through this campaign, Carrefour aims to celebrate the successes of Qatar's local products, which continue to grow in variety and quality, and enhance their presence in the market. As one of the region’s largest retailers, it is important that we form close partnerships with all local economic operators. By supporting farmers in Qatar and featuring more of their products, we are not only giving our customers the chance to buy the freshest ingredients but also encouraging them to support their local economy.”He added: “The event was a success and we witnessed positive growth with the amount of local vegetable produce sales increasing to 50 per cent in comparison to last year.” By highlighting locally sourced produce, Carrefour continues to encourage customers to be more conscious of where their food is sourced from, while providing them the opportunity to buy fresh, high quality and sustainably produced food from local farms at the best possible value.Carrefour Qatar's contributions to the Food Safety Programme over the past four years has played a significant role in the country's move towards self-sufficiency and food security. Choosing healthy food, produced locally and sustainably, makes it possible both to reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming and boost the local economy.Carrefour aims to continue giving back through on-going support of the local market, and thereby contributing to the nation’s economic and environmental development, both of which are key pillars of the government’s vision for 2030.
