Russian Mira Andreeva has become the third youngest player to qualify for the second round pf the 1000 points Madrid Masters.

Wildcard entrant Andreeva beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, ranked 49th in the world, 6-3, 6-4.

The 15-year-old Russian is only the third youngest player to qualify for the second round of Madrid Masters after American Catherine Bellis in 2015 and Coco Gauff in 2019, both of whom achieved the feat in the Miami Championship.

Andreeva, ranked 194 in the world, who celebrates her 16th birthday next Saturday, will meet Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maya in the second round on Thursday.

Andreeva has been among the top 300 and recently made her way to the top 200 club for the first time in her career.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Mayar Sherif progressed to the second round receiving a walk over from Italian Camila Giorgi they were tied a set apiece.

While Giorgi won the opening set 6-4, Sherif battled to claim the second 6-4 when her French opponent decided to withdraw.
