The Central Municipal Council (CMC) has recommended the Qatar General Water & Electricity Corporation (Kahramaa) to carry out a full-scale revision of its 5,000km water pipe network after a surge in complaints of water pipe leakages and corrosion.
The objective is to make sure that the chemicals used in water purification do not affect the water-pipes and do not cause any corrosion. The studies will also find out the reason behind corrosions in houses in some areas and find a solution.
A group of residents had submitted complaints to the CMC, saying water pipes in their homes were corroded due to the presence of high amount of chlorine dioxide in the water.
In response to the complaints, the CMC held a meeting with representatives of Kahramaa and Qatar General Organisation for Standardisation (QGCS) to study the issue.
The CMC also recommended Kahramaa to spread awareness among people about the types of water-pipes they should be using.
Moreover, the CMC recommended the QGCS to conduct analysis on the corroded water-pipes of the complainants in coordination with Kahramaa.
The CMC also recommended the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) to tighten control over water pipe outlets in the country.
Kahramaa, on its part, assured that the amount of chlorine dioxide being used for water purification doesn't exceed 0.4 percent per litre. It said frequent inspections are being carried out in hubs for water supply and the water is always fit for consumption.
The QGCS said the water-pipes used in Qatar are of the best quality and conforms to the international standards.
