As part of its commitment to preserving the environment and ensuring a sustainable living for future generations, Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Q.P.S.C.) marked this year’s World Environment Day with a spotlight on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability efforts in its daily operations to contribute towards protecting the environment for a better future.
Al Meera also used the occasion to call on residents to support innovative initiatives to promote a sustainable environment.
Celebrated every year on June 5, World Environment Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, and government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day to support the environment.
In its efforts to preserve the environment, Al Meera has introduced several campaigns to raise the community awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability and the best practices in accordance with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030, leading to various initiatives to protect, preserve and conserve the environment for future generations.
To involve the community in the challenge to reduce the volume of different types of waste sent to the landfill, Al Meera has pioneered several recycling projects to encourage people to take action to reduce waste and protect the environment. The company recently launched the first dedicated electronics recycling station to help reduce the volume electronic waste and combat its hazardous effects on the environment. The company also promotes reusable bags, offers reverse vending machines to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans, paper recycling, and battery recycling initiative.
Appreciating their commitment to preserving the environment and in celebration of World Environment Day, Al Meera gave 5X the usual reward points to Meera Rewards members who recycle their bottles and cans through Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and participate in the recycling activities at any of its recycling stations across its branches.
Since the deployment of the RVM machine, Al Meera has made it possible for customers to recycle over 45.5 million bottles and aluminum cans till date and has given away 97 million rewards points to members for supporting recycling initiatives.
To celebrate World Environment Day, customers were also encouraged to use Al Meera reusable bags for a chance to enter an online draw through Al Meera’s social media pages to win QR 500 worth of Meera Rewards Points. To participate in the online competition, customers took a photo of their Al Meera reusable bag when shopping at Al Meera, shared the photo on their story, using hashtag #GreenBagChallenge and tagging Al Meera.
Al Meera also embarks on regular beach clean-up campaigns in collaboration with local universities, government entities and other major players in the private sector to emphasize the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment, keeping the coastal lines clean and fostering a culture of environmental consciousness.
In addition, the company always joins hands with concerned authorities, especially the Ministry of Municipality and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as well as other environmental organisations, to support initiatives that promote afforestation, biodiversity preservation and waste management programmes.
