The Commercial Avenue, formerly known as the Barwa Commercial Avenue, on Monday announced that it will host the campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Indian’s first university in Qatar.
In a ceremony organised on Monday, the Commercial Avenue CEO Abdulla Haider officially handed over the state-of-the-art campus facility in Commercial Avenue at Ayn Khalid in Industrial Area to MIE SPPU Chairman Ali A Latif Al Misnad.
Milestone International Education (MIE), a company registered in Qatar, has partnered with SPPU in India to set up MIE SPPU Institute of Higher Education as the SPPU’s first campus in Qatar.
MIE will operate the MIE SPPU Institute of Higher Education fully licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar.
The campus will have well-structured and modern educational facilities, laboratories and libraries to ensure that students get all the required amenities.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the handing over ceremony, Haider said that the Commercial Avenue is expected to host many more such prestigious institutions in the near future.
Commercial Avenue has launched several initiatives to increase its occupancy, he said adding that he expects the occupancy level to double from the 2020 level in the near future.
“Our rents are very competitive now. Communication has become very easy with the development of several roads around the area. Metrolink buses are also expected to operate in the area soon. All this will make Commercial Avenue attractive for both business and residential purpose,” he said.
Addressing a press conference on the occasion, MIE SPPU President Hassan Chougule said, “The MIE SPPU Institute of Higher Education’s admissions and the academic team has started functioning in Qatar since June 2021. The institute will launch its academic programmes governed by the Savitribai Phule Pune University’s academic governance structure in the month of September this year.”
According to Chougule, the university will offer graduate programmes in science, arts, commerce and business administration from September this year with a fee structure ranging between QR30,000 to QR36,000 per year.
“The academic faculty conducting these courses will be recruited and deputed by Savitribai Phule Pune University and will have enough academic and industry capabilities to provide the holistic development of students to get them prepared for the futuristic careers in Qatar,” Chougule said.
The campus will have the capacity to accommodate 600 students, Chougule said adding that the initial response from students in Qatar to various courses in the very first year is quite encouraging.
“The campus will be open to students from all nationalities. We are expected to enrol a large number of students for the first batch. The classes will be held physically or online depending on the directive of the government due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Misnad said, ”Opening of India’s first university in Qatar shows the government’s endless support to Qatar’s private sector to thrive and grow.”
“We are confident that this new education initiative will urge academics and learners to equip their brains and hearts with knowledge and explore new inspiring programmes of study. Research is an integral part of academia and is contemporary and result-oriented. SPPU provides programmes that qualify its graduates for the local and the global markets,” Misnad said.
“We feel confident as the academic faculty conducting these courses have been recruited and deputed by Savitribai Phule Pune University. They all possess the academic and industry capabilities to provide overall development of students to prepare them for their future careers,” he said.
Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE Deepak Mittal, Khalid Abdulla Al Ali of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, DPS Group Chief Patron Mohammed Bin Hammam was also present on the occasion.
