Azhar Khan from the Class of 2013 has been named the 2023 Alumnus of the Year by Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq), a Qatar Foundation (QF) partner university. The award was presented to Khan during the annual alumni reunion event held recently in Education City. He is the eighth Alumnus of the Year named by Tamuq, joining Mariam Al-Bishri (’12), Bassam Ahmad (’11), Abeer Abuhelaiqa (’11), Mariam Al-Meer (’12), Dr Nayef Alyafei (’09), Yousef Al-Jaber (’07) and Muna Al-Mohannadi (’10) as the recipients of the award.

Khan said, “I am deeply honoured to receive the Texas A&M at Qatar Alumnus of the Year Award. As a proud Aggie, I remain committed to upholding the core values of respect, excellence, leadership, loyalty, integrity, and selfless service in all my endeavours. Throughout the years, I have maintained strong connections with the university through various means, including serving on the industry advisory board, mentoring both current and former students, collaborating with campus student organizations, and providing career development opportunities for present students. I am consistently impressed by the exceptional calibre of our students, who are poised to make a significant impact in the industry as future change-makers.”

Khan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering in 2013 and is currently a senior well integrity and production engineer with SLB. At SLB, he has a proven track record of outstanding performance and excellence in technical consulting, operations support, and business development. He has received several awards from SLB and their customers in Qatar for his contributions towards deploying new technology, developing novel technical solutions and workflows, and contributing to financial impact and savings.

During his time at the university, Khan was a top academic performer, was part of several impactful research groups, and was actively involved in student leadership roles. He represented the university at several international conferences, leadership seminars, and research workshops. He was also a regular feature of the university cricket and volleyball teams that won several inter-university championships.

Since graduating from Tamuq in 2013, Azhar has continued to make a positive contribution in several areas. He has fostered collaboration and strengthened the partnership between Tamuq and SLB through his consistent efforts. As a technical expert, he has delivered several lectures and served as an industry judge for multiple student paper contests, capstone presentations, and student exit interviews. Besides his role as a technical leader, Khan is also one of the SLB University Campus Managers in Qatar.
