Qatar's population has shrunk by 370,000 people from a year ago, according to an estimate for July, when the country generally witnesses an exodus of expatriate families as schools close for summer vacation.
Qatar's Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) said the country's population reduced from 2.75 million in July-2020 to 2.38 million in July-2021. Last year, the COVID-19-induced closure of borders saw scores of vacationers shelving their trips home and staying back in Qatar.

The population had declined by 290,000 in June-2021 and 180,000 in May-2021.

Moving on to other statistics, the report said the country recorded 1,892 live births in July, which also saw Qatari live births increasing by 1.5 percent when compared to the previous month. On the other hand, 273 deaths were recorded in July, down 8.7 percent against June, 2021.
While 346 couple got married in July, 141 divorces were finalised in the month, showing respective month-on-month declines of 17.8 percent and 34.7 percent.
The month also saw social security worth QR97 million benefitting 14,615 people, a decline of 0.5 percent month-on-month. The value of money, on the other hand, increased by 21.6 percent month-on-month.
Total electricity consumption in July stood at 5,511.2 GWh, showing a m-o-m increase of 11.5 percent and a y-o-y increase of 0.7 percent. Meanwhile, Qatar's total water consumption reached 57,705.5 cubic metres in the same month, down 0.02 percent m-o-m and 6.9 percent y-o-y. 
The PSA said municipalities in Qatar issued 532 permits in July, 2021, recording a month-on-month fall of 27.5 percent and a year-on-year drop of 22.2 percent.
As many as 5,440 new vehicles were registered in Qatar in July, up 4 percent m-o-m and down 2.5 percent y-o-y. The month saw 506 accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries. Of them, 89 percent caused light injuries, 8 percent inflicted severe injuries and 3 percent lead to deaths — as many as 16. 
In July, around 1 percent more vessels arrived in Qatar ports, bringing in 3.6 percent more tonnage of goods, over the previous month. Year-on-year, the number of arriving vessels saw an increase of 7.6 percent, while tonnage jumped by 7.1 percentage.
As for the banking sector, the Total Broad Money Supply (M2) stood at QR610.2 billion Qatari in July 2021, an annual increase of 3.8% compared with July 2020. On the other hand, cash equivalents, including commercial bank deposits, stood at QR953.6 billion in July 2021. This is an increase of 8.6 percet from QR878.1 billion recorded in July 2020.
