Ryyan Alshebl, a 29-year-old refugee from Syria, was officially sworn in as mayor of Ostelsheim in a solemn municipal council meeting on Friday evening.

Alshebl fled the war in Syria eight years ago.In April 2023, the citizens of the Swabian community of 2,500 inhabitants elected him as the new head of the town hall with an absolute majority of 55.41 percent.

The Young Mayors Network said it is unaware of any other refugee who came to Germany in 2015 who is now mayor of a German municipality.

There has been no other applicant with Syrian roots for a mayor’s office in the south-western German state, according to the Municipal Association of Baden-Württemberg.

The ceremony took place at the local city hall.
