Italy to transfer its Afghanistan embassy to Qatar

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Luigi Di Maio, who is currently visiting the country.
During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral cooperation relations between the two countries, and discussed the humanitarian situation and the latest field developments in both its security and political aspects in Afghanistan, in addition to the means of joint coordination to combat terrorism.
The Italian minister thanked Qatar for the assistance it provided to Italy in evacuating its citizens from Afghanistan.
Italy plans to move its Afghan embassy to Doha, Reuters quoted the Italian Foreign Minister as saying. This is the latest indication of Western diplomats setting up permanently outside Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover.
The announcement follows earlier signals that Western countries and the European Union, which have closed their missions in Kabul, may use Qatar as an offshore hub for their diplomatic relations with Afghanistan.
