Major Hamad Ali Al Muhannadi, the Head of the Radar and Scales Department at the General Traffic Department, has issued clarifications on regulations concerning the use of mobile phones while driving.
IN an interview with Al Rayyan channel, Al Muhannadi said that the violation of rules about using a mobile phone while driving is not limited to those who hold the phone in their hand, but also includes being distracted while driving by watching any visual material on the vehicle’s screen. According to Article 55 of the Traffic Law, it is prohibited to use mobile phones or any other devices while driving, using the hand to hold or use it. He underscored that, in accordance with the law, any interaction with a screen displaying visual content, even if the phone is mounted, qualifies as a violation.
He said the automatic monitoring of violations of the use of mobile phones while driving will significantly reduce accidents, as well as reduce traffic disruption by more than 90 percent.
The implementation of Automated Traffic Radar System will start from September 3.
