Riga: Latvia prevented 246 people from illegally crossing from neighbouring Belarus on Sunday - a 24-hour record, the Latvian Border Guard said on Monday.
According to the Border Guard, 472 people tried to cross the EU’s external border in the past three days.
On Sunday alone 246 attempts were stopped, the most ever over a 24-hour period, the EU and NATO country’s border agency said. That brings the total number of attempted illegal border crossings this year to over 7,800, compared to just under 5,300 last year.
Lithuania is looking to send up to 20 border guards to Latvia to support its Baltic neighbour, the BNS news agency reported on Monday, citing Deputy Interior Minister Arnoldas Abramavicius. In Lithuania, the number of illegal border crossing attempts has fallen sharply recently.(DPA)
