GENEVA: The State of Qatar affirmed its keenness to promote and protect human rights in Sudan, and ensure its stability, security, unity and territorial integrity, and renewed its support for the Sudanese people to overcome the crisis they are currently going through.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by HE Dr Hind Abdul Rahman Al Muftah, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, on Tuesday, during the interactive dialogue on the High Commissioner’s oral update on Sudan, within the framework of the work of the 54th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Her Excellency indicated that the State of Qatar, while emphasizing the importance of adhering to human rights guarantees for the Sudanese people during states of peace and war, stresses that the main step begins with an immediate cessation of fighting, restoring security, and entering into a serious dialogue that leads to ending the current crisis through peaceful means and spares the Sudanese from further harm and suffering.

In this regard, it renewed the State of Qatar’s support for the joint Saudi-American initiative, and its welcome to other regional and international endeavors, expressing its hope that these efforts will be crowned with success.

She added that the State of Qatar is keenly following developments in the humanitarian situation in Sudan, and emphasizes the continuation of its efforts to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people since the beginning of the crisis.

She noted the State of Qatar's response to the humanitarian plan in Sudan and the regional refugee plan, based on its moral and humanitarian duty, and in continuation of its ongoing development efforts in Sudan.

Her Excellency called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to resort to the voice of reason, give priority to the public interest, and pursue dialogue as a means of resolving differences, to reach a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement that achieves the aspirations of the Sudanese people for stability, development and prosperity.
