Qatar has affirmed its keenness, within the framework of its international relations, to adopt a foreign policy that promotes strengthening international cooperation to establish world peace, through hosting negotiations and mediating in conflicts to resolve them peacefully.

This came in Qatar’s statement delivered HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva by Dr Hind Abdul Rahman Al Muftah during the general debate on the oral update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as part of the work of the 54th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Muftah said Qatar has contributed to efforts to achieve development in all fields, noting that Qatar’s development assistance has focused in general on health, education and water sectors, in addition to assistance related to exceptional circumstances faced by some countries, such as natural disasters, armed conflicts and health pandemics.

She pointed out that she shares the opinion of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the importance of the linkage and synergy between all human rights, including the right to development, and the importance of taking this linkage into account to deal with all human rights equally.

She pointed out that Qatar has adopted a strategic vision for its national development policy, the Qatar National Vision 2030, which is based on interconnected and complementary pillars in the fields of human, social, economic and environmental development.

The Qatari diplomat explained that the growing challenges facing the world today, from conflicts, energy crises, disruptions to food supply chains, water scarcity and climate change, have had a significant impact on food security, which requires everyone to implement effective measures and solutions that can address these challenges that affect the lives and dignity of humanity.

She pointed to Qatar’s commitment to allocating a significant portion of its humanitarian and development assistance to address hunger and food insecurity.

She added that among the most prominent examples is a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which aims to provide up to $200 million to support comprehensive and climate-smart economic and agricultural development and to generate income and economic opportunities for small producers in Africa.

Qatar has contributed $20 million to support the initiative to export Ukrainian grain and has constantly stressed the need to return to the grain export agreement to ensure the continuation of global food supply lines and the delivery of food to consumers.

She considered Qatar’s hosting of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries and the adoption of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade (2022 - 2031) a major achievement and a step forward in promoting international efforts to support these countries in achieving their legitimate aspirations for development.
