UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has praised the efforts of Qatar in sponsoring the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Action Dialogue initiative, which contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During the special session on advancing sustainable development in complex settings, which was held on the sidelines of the 78th UNGA in New York, the Deputy Secretary-General hailed the efforts made by Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Public-Private Partnerships and Islamic Social Finance Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Muraikhi, within the framework of supporting this initiative.
Within the framework of this initiative, Qatar is responsible for providing the necessary support to create this partnership by contributing to the meetings and reports submitted to HE the UN Secretary-General.
For his part, Dr Al Muraikhi pointed out the need for the UN to cooperate with governments and the private sector to solve problems jointly, and develop a framework that enables partnerships between the public and private sectors by working together, giving stakeholders the ability to create a system that identifies pressing global needs and innovative solutions that leverage the assets and resources provided by the private sector.
Dr Al Muraikhi added that this system not only enhances efficiency in facing complex challenges, but also builds confidence among stakeholders, which enhances a shared sense of responsibility in achieving SDGs. Through these partnerships, the UN can harness the expertise and financial capabilities of the private sector, shaping a stronger and more influential system to address critical issues on a global scale.
The PPP Action Dialogue looks at how to foster and facilitate more partnerships with the private sector, and prepares a report to the UN Secretary-General that includes concrete and practical recommendations for Member States, the UN system, and other relevant stakeholders on how to better engage.
The PPP Action Dialogue aims to achieve seven main objectives: strengthening and coordinating the current UN structure and building its capacity to partner with the private sector, including clear metrics that measure the impact of public-private partnerships, demonstrating commitment, building confidence, and increasing dialogue between stakeholders to achieve the sustainable development goals comprehensively.
It also aims to facilitate the exchange of information, focusing on opportunities and solutions for participation and strengthening partnerships to create a work environment that proposes innovative solutions, in addition to raising the level of awareness of the SDGs and humanitarian and development needs while strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors that support the UN in meeting those needs through innovative solutions.
The dialogue on PPP contributes to identifying strategies to engage private sector partners in the whole-of-society approach outlined in the renewed social contract of the general agenda for humanitarian and development needs. This includes developing and delivering solutions and preparing transparent reports that meet the desires of stakeholders, as well as enhancing preparedness partnerships to enhance rapid response in emergency response, and encouraging the private sector to quickly contribute to meeting urgent humanitarian needs.
It also aims to strengthen and coordinate the current UN structure and build its capabilities to partner with the private sector, including clear metrics that measure the impact of partnerships between the public and private sectors.
