The Dane Jess Thorup has been appointed the new head coach at Bundesliga club Augsburg, the southern German club announced on Sunday evening.

The 53-year-old will be given a contract until June 30, 2025, it said. He will succeed Enrico Maaßen, with whom Augsburg parted ways on October 9.

Thorup had been without a club for more than a year - before that he had led Copenhagen to the league title and the Champions League.

“We are delighted that in Jess we have been able to attract a football professional and person to [Augsburg] who has been a head coach at the highest level for many years and has a lot of experience at national and international level,” said Augsburg’s sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

“Jess has proven in his previous stations that he can both develop players and lead teams to success.” Augsburg presented the new coach in time for the international break to prepare the team for its next match on October 22 at Heidenheim.

Thorup, who was an active football player with KFC Uerdingen in Germany, has a lot of work to do with the young team after only two wins in the past 19 competitive matches.

Until his appointment, the team had been coached on an interim basis by U23 coach Tobias Strobl.
