MINISTER of Justice HE Dr Hassan bin Lahdan al Mohannadi stressed that Qatar's governmental institutions and national committees are keen to uphold the principle of the rule of law and continue their efforts to increase community awareness.
In his opening remarks at the inauguration of the international humanitarian law symposium organised by the national committee for international humanitarian law in cooperation with its counterpart in Morocco, the Minister of Justice said that this event was to draw attention to the great legal risks and serious violations that have become normal for some countries, in disregard of the conventions and treaties which fall under the banner of international humanitarian law.
He added that this symposium comes at the heart of the mission of the national committee for international humanitarian law, which its establishment was the embodiment of the approach of the State of Qatar under the leadership of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, and his directives to the government of Qatar to work with its partners in the region and the world to uphold the principle of the rule of law at the national and international levels, out of the wise leadership's belief in the importance of this principle for the prevention of conflicts, the maintenance of peace and security and the peaceful resolution of disputes, including the implementation of international law.
He pointed out that the organisation of this symposium reflects Qatar's commitment to respect international humanitarian law, and its efforts to encourage the rest of the world in order to reach the supreme objective related to the optimal application of the rules of law and its observance in the event of disputes and conflicts between countries.
The Minister welcomed the delegation of the national committee for international humanitarian law of Morocco and said that the participation of the Moroccan delegation in this symposium underlines Morocco's seriousness in respect of international laws and its firm commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law.
The Minister noted that international humanitarian law today faces serious challenges, especially in situations of armed conflict and the failure of the international community to protect civilians in places of conflict and the hotbeds of tension and conflict.
He also pointed out that international humanitarian law is almost paralyzed today in areas of conflicts, pointing out that Qatar, despite all the challenges, will remain a safe haven for the oppressed as emphasised by HH the Emir, and will remain the supporter of the oppressed.
