Doha Rugby Club’s Under 16-year-old girls team traveled to Dubai to compete in the Saxo Bank 7s Sports Festival on 21 st October and achieved a remarkable victory, going unbeaten to lift the Under 16s Quick Rip trophy.
The Festival, held annually in Dubai, is the Gulf region’s only sports festival exclusively for women and girls and brought together teams from across the United Arab Emirates, with Doha Rugby Club as the sole international team participating in the rugby section. More than 300 girls took part in the junior section of the rugby tournament, aged from 6 years to 18 years old.
Commenting on the team’s victory, Doha Rugby Club Chairman, Tim Newnham, said: “The participation of the girls rugby team at the Saxo 7s was the first time since early 2020 that any of our Club sides have travelled abroad for a major tournament. To return home as tournament winners is a remarkable accomplishment and testament to the hard work and dedication they put in each week in training.
“The Club is thriving this season with a record number of players in some of our younger age groups. We are looking forward to more away trips for tournaments for all our junior age groups and to hosting our own tournaments here in Doha,” he added.
U16s Captain, Poppy Parker-Woods, said: “I am incredibly proud of the effort of all the girls who travelled to Dubai and contributed to this outstanding achievement. The girls showed real character in the final against Al Ain Ramblers to come back from two tries down early on and score in the final seconds of the match to claim victory.”
Established in 1974, Doha Rugby Club is one of Qatar’s oldest sports clubs and is currently based at Doha Sports Park. The Club offers high-quality rugby coaching and fixtures for boys and girls aged from 3 to 18 years old and currently has more than 250 players in the Minis and Youth Section.
