In a historic move, the United Kingdom has unveiled its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) programme, marking a significant shift in its border control and security measures.

With the introduction of the programme, Qatari citizens have earned another milestone as they become the world’s pioneering users of the United Kingdom’s groundbreaking Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) programme from November 15, 2023.

This recognition marks Qatar’s unique status as the very first nationality to benefit from the ETA system, setting a precedence for a new era of travel authorisation.

The initiative, introduced as part of the UK’s broader transformation and digitisation of its border systems, is set to enhance national security while providing a more streamlined experience for legitimate travellers.

This groundbreaking programme replaces the Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) scheme, offering a cost-effective and extended travel authorisation solution.

British Ambassador to Qatar HE Jon Wilks said, “I am pleased to announce that as of today, Qatari citizens will be the world’s first beneficiaries of the new British Electronic Travel Authorisation programme. The strong relations between our peoples are highly valued, with Qataris making over a million visits annually. We look forward to welcoming even more.”

The ETA scheme initially targets Qatari nationals, who can apply for their ETA starting from October 25, 2023. They will require an ETA to travel to the UK from November 15, 2023. The programme will progressively expand to visitors from other Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan, with an ETA application window opening on February 1, 2024.

For cost and validity, the ETA costs £10 and allows multiple journeys to the UK over a two-year period or until the passport expires, whichever comes sooner.

While this marks the first phase of implementation, the UK plans to introduce the ETA programme to visitors worldwide who don’t currently require a visa for short stays, including European nationals. Further details will be released in due course.

The application process is streamlined and efficient, with most applicants receiving a response within three working days, often sooner. Applicants can use the ‘UK ETA app’ or access the application through GOV.UK. The process includes providing contact and passport details, a valid photo and answering a set of questions.

Regarding EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, in the future, they (except Irish citizens) will also be required to obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK. Details on when this requirement will take effect will be communicated in due course.

Travellers planning to stay in the UK for longer than six months or for purposes other than visit, transit and some business visits will need to apply for a relevant visa. A visa checking tool is available on GOV.UK for individuals to determine their specific visa requirements.
