Australian Governor General David Hurley inaugurated the Engineers Australia National Congress in Melbourne. The Qatar Chapter was represented at the conference by President Asif Rahmany, highlighting the collaborative nature of the global engineering community.

Working alongside other members, Congress members combine the broad collective knowledge from across various units and guide the strategic direction of Engineers Australia.

During his keynote speech, the Governor General emphasised the crucial role of engineers in shaping the nation’s future and driving societal progress. He underlined the significance of innovation, sustainability, and ethical practices in engineering, recognising the substantial contributions and responsibilities of engineers in bringing about positive change.

Following the Governor General’s address, Engineers Australia Board Chair and National President Dr Nick Fleming discussed the importance of fostering collaboration and leveraging expertise to tackle the challenges and opportunities facing the global engineering community.

The first day of the Congress included a panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence, exploring the transformative potential of AI in engineering and sparking conversations about the future of technological integration in the industry.

Post-lunch sessions were equally enlightening, with Engineers Australia Chief Jane MacMaster providing insights from the Engineering the Australian Workforce Report and discussing professional standards and registration, including updates on evolving regulatory landscapes and their implications for engineering standards.

The Congress, scheduled to continue on November 2, 2023, will explore diverse topics related to the future of engineering and industry growth. The Engineers Australia National Congress serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and forward-thinking discussions, significantly contributing to the advancement of the engineering landscape in Australia and worldwide.
