DOHA: The General Directorate of Traffic, in collaboration with the National Traffic Safety Committee, has marked the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims which was endorsed by the United Nations as a global day to be observed on the third Sunday of November each year.
Marked under the slogan 'Remember, Support, Act', the high-profile global event calls for concerted local, regional, and international efforts to reduce road accident casualties, and emphasizes the need for placing traffic safety among the priorities of countries and concerned parties in order to achieve safety and protect lives and communities from the risks resulting from road accidents.
Commenting on the occasion, Acting Director General of Traffic Brig Abdulaziz bin Jassim Al Thani said the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims offers an opportunity to remember the people who lost their lives, express solidarity with those who were seriously injured in traffic accidents, and support their families and friends, not only in Qatar but all over the world.
The General Directorate of Traffic commemorates this occasion every year with the aim of reminding road users of the dangers of traffic accidents, and emphasizing the importance of safe driving which is the first and main step towards the safety and protection of all road users, especially the most vulnerable groups - pedestrians and drivers of motorcycles, electric bicycles, and bicycles, he noted.
Commemorating the victims of traffic accidents is part of the great efforts exerted by all authorities concerned with traffic affairs in the country over the years to reduce the rates of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic accidents, by applying the best international practices, standards, and regulations that enhance traffic safety, he said.
This is done by the authorities concerned with designing and implementing roads, developing traffic laws and legislation, improving systems for collecting and following up on accident data and standardizing them, as well as strengthening road monitoring systems, and raising the efficiency of policemen, ambulances, and medical teams to enhance their efforts in achieving traffic safety and rescuing the injured, Brig Abdulaziz bin Jassim Al Thani added.
