The air, sea and land borders between Qatar and Saudi Arabia will reopen tonight, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah has announced on live television on Monday from Kuwait City. The agreement comes on the eve of the 41st Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, to be held in Al Ula in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
A senior official in Donald Trump administration has also confirmed that a breakthrough has been reached in the conflict, and that an agreement to end the dispute will be signed on Tuesday. The agreement provides for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt to lift the blockade on Qatar, and Doha to abandon the lawsuits related to it. White House adviser Jared Kushner helped negotiate the agreement to resolve the Gulf crisis and will attend the signing ceremony with two other officials.
The news is being aired by media in Saudi Arabia as well.
Speaking on TV, the Kuwait FM said the Amir of Kuwait has made calls with the Amir of Qatar and the Saudi Crown Prince in order to sign the "Al-Ula summit statement".
He said the Gulf Cooperation Council summit would be an inclusive summit and "all relevant issues" would be addressed.
The news comes after HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received a verbal message from his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah.
The leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries will hold the 41st GCC summit in Riyadh on Tuesday.
The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Nayef Falah Al Hajraf, confirmed on Saturday that the leaders of the Gulf states are keen to hold the 41st summit on January 5, despite the exceptional circumstances, at a time when a positive atmosphere prevails surrounding the summit.
Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani recently confirmed that a breakthrough has been achieved in efforts to end the Gulf crisis. The crisis was precipitated by a sea, land and air blockade imposed on Qatar by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt in June 2017.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud has twice said Riyadh is seeking a way to resolve the three-year rift.
