Forward Tony Farmer grabbed 38 points to push Al Rayyan Club to second spot on the QBF League table with an easy 94-72 victory against Al Khor Club at the Al Gharafa Club Indoor Hall on Saturday.
Farmer, who was on the floor for 36 minutes and 34 seconds, sank four shots beyond the arc in six attempts as well as the winners were comfortably ahead at the interval by 47-32).
Al Rayyan outscored Al Khor by 11 points in the first and last quarters, enjoying their biggest lead in the match of 23 points when they forged 89-66 ahead. Their three-point conversion was quite high with 14 of the 25 shots coming through.
Guard Mohamed Hassan A Mohamed (aka Mizo Amin), who had 19 points, was the leading three-point scorer in the match with five in eight. Other useful scorers for Al Rayyan were Moahmed Abdelkawy (13 points), Eric Lockett (10 points and 11 assists) and veteran Tanguy Ngombo (nine points and 13 rebounds).
With the second win in a row and overall a fourth, Al Rayyan have got 10 points in six games. Three other teams have got the same win-loss record – Al Ahli, Qatar Sports Club and Al Wakrah.
Al Khor, who have lost all the six matches so far, had centre Khobi Williamson finishing as their top-scorer. He also managed a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Madrious Gibbs added 17 points and 13 assists, while Aladiji Magassa logged 14 points.
In a later match, Al Gharafa Club extended their winning run to three when they held off Al Arabi Club 75-72. The winners were 40-30 up at the interval but Al Arabi staged a stirring comeback through the third quarter, outscoring the opponents 25-9.
With 19 seconds left, Al Arabi were just four points behind Al Gharafa 69-73) with Mohammed Harat pulling off a dunk. This was followed by Al Gharafa’s Abdulrahman Saad squandering both the free throws after a foul by Harat.
Khalid Abdi failed to score off a three-point attempt but Kevin Galloway managed to grab the rebound and came back to sink a trey, which narrowed down the score to 72-73 with four second remaining.
Abdi committed another personal foul on Theron Bussey off the next play and the Al Gharafa guard went on to nail both the free throws to widen the lead to 75-72. Al Arabi guard Christian Casas tried a three-pointer but failed to get it in.
Bussey led the scoring for Al Gharafa with 31. Saad netted 15, Jushua Caldwell earned 11, while Mohd Yousuf Mohammed had eight points and 10 rebounds.
For Al Arabi, Kevin Galloway (20 points and 14 rebounds), Miroslav Todic (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Mohammed Harat (18 points and 10 rebounds) collected fine double-double but it was a better scoring by Al Gharafa in the paint (40-22) which proved crucial in the close match.
