VALLETTA: The Maltese government said on Tuesday it has asked Pope Francis to take in a migrant family as a gesture of solidarity with the EU’s smallest country.
In a diplomatic note to the Holy See, Valletta said the gesture would be a “motivation reminder for other bigger states to carry their fair share of the burden which Malta is disproportionately facing.” Some 56 migrants are currently stranded on a tourist boat moored off Malta’s coast. The country says they will remain there until other EU member states agree to take in a fair share of them.
The pope is a vocal defender of migrant rights, and already personally intervened to help migrants detained in the Greek island of Lesbos, relocating dozens to the Vatican. (DPA)
