In a fitting tribute to healthcare and frontline workers battling the COVID-19 virus outbreak in the country, the Batch 12 baking students of the DOLE-OWWA Culinary Training Programme, formerly WASAHQ, made special themed cakes honouring their heroism and dedication at this time of crisis.
Led by the Programme’s Acting Chairman Alma Barcelina and the rest of the leadership of the initiative and volunteer instructors, the special project has engaged the students in a worthwhile cause at the same time brought smiles to the faces of the recipients of the special treats.
A tribute cake shaped in a virus image was handed over to Philippine Labour Attache to Qatar David Des Dicang honouring the tireless efforts of Philippine Labour Office in Doha under his leadership, together with the Philippine Embassy and the Qatar government, to oversee the welfare and cater to the needs of Filipino expats and workers amidst the extraordinary situation.
The cake was made by student Jewel-Ann B. Cambri with the dedication message, “Not all superheroes wear capes, some are in the frontlines battling against unseen enemy. Thank You Front Liners for your courage and dedication to fight against COVID-19. Your efforts and sacrifices are appreciated. We Salute You, Modern Heroes!”
Cambri also made a special cake for Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Officer Evelyn Laranang. The cake is aptly adorned with images of frontline workers.
Another student, Maritess A. Dejoras, flexed her baking skills and made the famous Filipino cheesecake for POLO-OWWA Administrative Staff Erick Dizon. Maritess wrote the following dedication message to her chosen frontliner, “Thank you for your heroic efforts in helping those in need. Words can’t express your selfless acts in this crisis and each one of you are in our thoughts and prayers daily. You guys are the true heroes. Please keep healthy and don’t forget to look after yourselves. Your work is important to us all, thank you. God bless you all!”
Karlo Crisanto Quiogue, Ambulance Paramedic at the HMC Ambulance Service, HIA, received a Chocolate COVID Kit Cake from another student Venia B. Tolentino. Her dedication message to Karlo states, “As a front liner, you always have to stay safe and healthy. We will always stand with you alongside Qatar in the fight against COVID. Thank you so much and God Bless You All!”
Roselyn C. Mendoza honoured the doctors, nurses, nurse assistants, pharmacists and receptionist at The Apollo Clinic with a COVID-19 Frontliners Cake while Rhea Ordiz made a fancy cake that brought joy to the nurses and laboratory staff of Al Thumama Health Center.
A cake titled Salute Cake was made by Shereen Bejo for the Critical Care Staff Nurses at the Emergency Department of Hamad. Shereen’s message with the cake states, “Thank you! To our frontliners for your dedications and sacrifice in the battle against COVID-19. Yours is a demonstration of professional acumen, personal courage, unwavering service and ethics in our fight against the Pandemic. Our everyday Heroes. So around the globe, we salute our Front-liners for their commitment and honor their courage.”
An appreciation cake for frontliners was made by Maria Luisa Rabaya for the Heart Hospital Cardiac Catherization Lab Staff at HMC while Joe-Ann O. Caig named her cake “Shield the True Angels from Virus” for Kai San Jose, Neth Gomez and other Pediatric Pediatric Emergency Center Staff, Nurses & Other Service Support in Al Sadd.
Mark Aliben Bautista dedicated his ChocoDuo Sponge Frontliners Cake to Jean Ringor, Louie Aguirre, Ean Dolf Blake and Jason Asuncion who are Primary Health Care staff. While Lilibeth Handig baked a special cake for the bikers of the Filipino fast food chain Jollibee in Al Wakrah.
