Gaza City A woman died of COVID-19 in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, marking the region’s first such death, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health announced.
The victim was identified as Fadila Abu Reida, 77, according to a Health Ministry statement. She had returned from Egypt last week through the Rafah Crossing and died in a quarantine hospital on the Palestinian side of the crossing.
The salient has reported 55 cases, but this is the first death since the disease was first spotted there on March 5. There have been four deaths in the region’s other Palestinian-controlled territories.
Both the Palestinian Authority, which rules the West Bank, and Hamas authorities, which rule the Gaza Strip, had recently tightened precautionary measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus. (DPA)
