The Embassy of Qatar to Mexico, in cooperation with the Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO), organised an online event to mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Mexico.
The event was attended by Ambassador of Qatar to Mexico HE Mohammed bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Ambassador of Mexico to Qatar HE Graciela Gomez Garcia and Dr A Contreras, coordinator of relations at the Department of International Trade of IBERO.
Ambassador Kuwari, in his speech, touched on the prospects for bilateral relations between the two countries that were distinguished by cooperation and joint work. He noted the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on June 30, 1975, the opening of Qatari embassy in Mexico City in 2014 and Mexico’s opening of its embassy in Doha in 2015.
He said the bilateral relations received a great boost through the visit of The Amir of the State of Qatar HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Mexico, which was the first of its kind, in November 2015. The visit resulted in the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding, including on establishing direct air services between the two countries, and for cooperation in cultural, artistic and energy sectors, among others, he pointed out.
He also referred to the visit of the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to Qatar in January 2016, when the two countries signed agreements on education, science, community development, culture, and technical and information cooperation. The two visits contributed to boosting the prospects for bilateral relations between the two countries at all levels, the ambassador said.
Ambassador Garcia confirmed her country’s keenness to enhance cooperation relations with Qatar in all fields, especially in investment and trade. She stressed the depth of the ties between Qatar and Mexico, and said that Mexico and Qatar are defenders of peace values and principles of respect for international law such as respect for national sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and the pursuit of a negotiated solution to differences.
