Qatar Airways on Monday said it would continue passenger and cargo operations to India even as several countries imposed a ban on travellers coming from that country amid a huge surge in COVID-19.
“India holds a special place in our hearts and we stand in close solidarity with this great nation during these challenging times. We remain committed to go above and beyond and deliver our steadfast support to our Indian friends, both with continued passenger and cargo operations,” the Qatar- flagged carrier said in a tweet on Monday.
Qatar is one of the few countries in the GCC that have not yet announced an entry ban on people who have been to India recently. GCC nations of the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman have joined the US, Australia, Hong Kong, the UK, Pakistan and New Zealand in barring travellers from India.
On Monday, India recorded a new global high for daily coronavirus cases for a fifth straight day at 352, 991.
India was initially seen as a success story in weathering the pandemic, but the virus is now racing through its massive population of nearly 1.4 billion, and systems are beginning to collapse.
On Monday, the country reported 2,812 deaths, with roughly 117 Indians succumbing to the disease every hour — and experts say even those figures are likely an under counted. The new infections brought India’s total to more than 17.3 million, behind only the US. (TNN)
