Colombo: Teachers in Sri Lankan government-run schools on Monday resolved to continue their two-week-old boycott of online classes, which replaced in-person teaching for millions of students during the pandemic.
The teachers want a salary dispute resolved and a controversial bill that could pave the way for universities to come under the control of the Defence Ministry be withdrawn before they return to online teaching.
Over 200,000 teachers conducting online classes for some 4 million students in state-run schools are backing the strike, general secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin told dpa.
“We have decided to continue our protest campaign until the issues raised by the teachers are resolved,” he said.
Sri Lanka introduced online educational programmes after schools were closed in September due to the spread of Covid-19. (dpa)
