Hong Kong Two activists pleaded guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces at Hong Kong’s High Court on Thursday, in a case linked to jailed media mogul Jimmy Lai.
Andy Li, 31, and Chan Tse-wah, 30, admitted to colluding with Lai, 73, and others in an attempt to get foreign forces to impose sanctions on Hong Kong or China between July 2020 and February 2021.
Sanctions on Chinese officials, including Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam, led to China creating an Anti-Sanctions Law last June, a move expected to be rubber-stamped into Hong Kong’s constitution on Friday during National People’s Congress (NPC) talks in Beijing. Prosecutors allege the two were members of a campaign led by Lai, the owner of media group Next Digital, which produced the now-closed pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper. (dpa)
