Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QU-YSC) won four prizes for innovative projects at the sixth International Exhibition for Innovation (ISIF 21) within the TEKNOFEST Festival in Turkey.
The QU-YSC received the awards after the student projects were reviewed by several juries over two consecutive days. The international exhibition is organised every year under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, and hosted by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) and the International Federation of Inventors Association (IFIA), with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The research titled ‘Marine Degradable Plastic Based on Soybean By-Products’ won the gold medal for its potential to contribute to the reduction of plastic waste. Another research titled ‘Development of organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OHPs) microfibre based memristors’ won the silver medal. It was presented by Muhammad Al-Hurr, a medicine student at QU.
The research aims to develop micro-fibres with stability, high efficiency and superior electrical capacity for use in many memory-saving applications for optoelectronic devices, because of its important benefits such as lower energy consumption, density and higher operating speed.
Finally, a project titled ‘Sports innovation using modern scientific concepts: A case study in Qatar’, presented by Abdul Rahman Al Kuwari, Hamad Al Shahrani, Salem Al Sulaiti and Turki Al Mutawa, eleventh grade students at Jassim Bin Hamad Secondary School for Boys, won the silver medal and gold medal presented by the State Office of Industrial Property in Macedonia. In it, the students developed a traditional Qatari game and the tools used to play it by applying scientific techniques to convert it into a modern team game.
All students who won the exhibition prizes participated in the STEM programmes, and capacity building and research initiatives provided by the QU-YSC. The centre facilitated the transfer and acquisition of knowledge for the students by establishing partnerships with the various centres, research bodies and researchers at QU. Students learned using applied methods in modern university laboratories, and student-centred approaches. By participating in the exhibition, the students were able to publish their researches, which represent innovative and effective scientific solutions in different industries and applications. They also reviewed their capabilities in research, investigation, testing, verification and presentation of results efficiently in scientific posters.
On the occasion, Prof Dr Noora Al-Thani, director of the QU_YSC, congratulated all the winning students and expressed her pride in their achievements.
She said, “Today we witness a new victory for the centre’s students who persevered, innovated and presented solutions and innovations that benefit Qatar and the world. The students of the QU-YSC are distinguished by their excellence in applied fields and their readiness for practical life in the fields of engineering, technology and science, which prepares them for leadership roles in the future.”
