Turkey and Russia are considering strengthening defence ties, including joint steps in submarines and warplanes, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, despite US sanction threats.
Speaking to reporters on his return flight from a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Erdogan said the two countries are mulling further technology transfers.
Among the plans are building two more Russian nuclear power plants in Turkey and joint work on space rocket launch platforms, Erdogan said in remarks carried by local media, including Hurriyet, on Thursday.
Erdogan’s remarks come a week after he lamented worsening ties with the US and said he would move ahead with a Russian missile defence system programme.
Washington last year imposed sanctions on NATO ally Ankara for purchasing the Russian S-400, which the US sees as a threat. The US also suspended Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet production programme and warned of further sanctions if the S-400 system is activated.
