Pakistan Arts Society-Qatar (PAS-Q), in collaboration with Pak Shamaa School, organised an educational workshop titled ‘Overcoming Challenges with Student Assessment’ in the institution’s premises recently.
Dr Fiona Robson, Head of Discipline for Business Management and Joint Programmes at AFG College with the University of Aberdeen, Qatar, was the guest speaker on the ocacsion.
Dr Fiona has earlier worked as deputy director of Roehampton Business School, University of Roehampton, the UK. Formerly a principal lecturer in HRM at Newcastle Business School, she specialises in internationalization, partnerships, learning and teaching. She has successfully supervised six doctoral students to completion of their research works.
The lecture was attended largely by senior faculty members of Pak Shamaa and guests from the academia and corporate learning and development sector like Dr Ali Malik from QFBA-Northumbria University, and Managing Director of Kaamil Training Centre Asif Raza.
Welcoming the participants, guests and the distinguished speaker, PAS-Q President Abrar Hussain highlighted the importance of the workshop’s topic, especially in the pre-Covid-19, during the Covid-19 and post-Covid-19 scenarios.
He praised the hard work, efforts and determination of Pak Shamaa’s faculty in conducting online classes successfully.
Hasan Khawaja, a well-known HR practitioner and a chartered member of CIPD-UK, introduced the guest speaker to the audience.
Dr Robson delivered a very engaging and interactive session and shared her expert opinion on issues related to students’ engagement during difficult times of the pandemic.
She stressed the need to adopt new methods in teaching and training.
In her lecture, Dr Robson covered topics like difficulties and opportunities associated with assessing the work of students. While sharing experiences of working in the UK higher education for more than 15 years, Dr Robson stressed on the need to explore issues surrounding assessment design, enhancing student assessment literacy, providing formative feedback opportunities, and presenting students with constructive feedback and feed-forward.
She also shared real-life examples and the strategies she developed through working with students in different countries.
A question-answer session followed during which teachers asked various issues related to student’s assessment. When asked which assessment design is preferable for a class of mixed-ability students, she said different group of students should be dealt fairly and given an opportunity to have self-assessment that reflect on their individual results.
Answering another question as to why teachers need to rely on assessment rubrics while assessing the students’ performance, she noted that it helps teachers apply a set standard and students can visualise their performance accordingly.
She noted that the process also helps teachers to initiate discussions with students about their performance.
