Cairo - Egyptian authorities said that two police officers were killed and two others injured in a shoot-out with a gunman in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya on Wednesday.
The violence erupted after police had headed to arrest the man, who was wanted for illegally dealing in firearms, but he opened fire at them, the Egyptian prosecution said in an online statement. The accused was also killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, the statement said. The gunman had shot with an automatic rifle at the police from the rooftop of a house where he had holed up, privately owned newspaper Al Shorouk reported. Egypt’s chief prosecutor Hamada al-Sawy ordered an urgent probe into the incident. (dpa)
