London: A December deadline has been set for Britain and the European Union to find a solution to the problems Brexit has created in terms of the relationship of both to Northern Ireland, said a top British official on Monday. The Northern Ireland Protocol was a compromise reached as Britain moved to exit the EU, by which Northern Ireland would remain part of the EU common market so as to avoid a hard border splitting the Irish island. But the decision has enraged people in Northern Ireland who feel more affinity to Britain and now feel cut off from the rest of the country.
David Frost, a Cabinet member and the chief negotiator for Task Force Europe, said both sides wanted the dispute over the post-Brexit terms “settled one way or the other” before the winter as he admitted there were still “significant” gaps between them on reaching an agreement.
