Mogadishu UN agencies are warning of an alarming oncoming drought in Somalia, where the rainy season has not brought enough rainfall for several years in a row. Some 2.3 million people - about a fifth of the population in the country on the Horn of Africa - have far too little water at their disposal, the UN emergency aid office OCHA said, adding that riverbeds and wells had dried up. The UN Agency for Agriculture and Food (FAO) in Somalia referred to an “extremely worrying” situation.
According to the UN, more than 96,000 people have already left their homes, especially in the centre and south of the country, because there is not enough food and water. Khadija Diriye, minister for humanitarian affairs, warned just days ago that children, the elderly and the sick are particularly at risk of starvation. (Agencies)
